The Babadook

At the start of the film, it fades in and out from the scene. It fades to darkness and then fade back to the scene. The main character is shown at the start. We see that she is in a car crash and is in distress. The fading implies that the woman is having a life or death situation and is literally fading into darkness. The first sequence is almost all darkness. It is hard to make out anything that is in the scene. This could imply that there is something there that the audience and the main characters can't see. There could be something in the darkness watching them. The main character's hair is messy and dirty, this instantly shows us that something bad is happening and this is not a normal situation. It also shows that she is distressed and anxious. The opening sequence is set inside the main characters old house, this makes it more eerie and adds more of a scary effect.

The Conjuring

We see classic conventions of a horror film in the opening sequence. There is dark lighting, the characters faces look distressed. The film has a sort of grey scale to it so there are no vibrant colours, just dark plain ones. In the first sequence, they show us the backstory and set up things for later in the film. It starts off in the past and then skips to the future. The setting in the opening sequence is old worn down house. The house is filled with old furniture. Throughout the scene, there is eerie music and loud sounds such as banging. Genre made clear by the music and the slow edits in the film opening

IT

In the opening of IT, it is a dark evening in an empty town. There are no bright colours other than the boys yellow coat. This can represent his innocence compared to everything around him. The yellow can show his joy and happiness as a child. We can tell that this is a horror just from the start. The darkness and the rain give it away. The lack of people make the child seem more in danger as there is no one around to help him. The narrative is linear, the film starts at the start of the story. We briefly meet one of the main characters for a few seconds before he is cut off.

Smile (Student film)

At the start, we meet the main character of the film. She is shown in a taxi. It is night time and she is alone. This instantly tells us what genre this is as it conforms to the conventions of horror

2a) I came up with my idea from my knowledge and experience watching horror films. I have been inspired by my favourite film The Conjuring. I have chosen my idea because i really enjoy horror films and i also think if they are done really well they can be very good and scary.

Opening scene:

Halloween night. Pumpkins and fireworks light up the town. A young boy is heading home from a Halloween party. He is walking fast, looking around him at every turn. He looks worried, his face shows distraught. Suddenly he hears a rustle in the bush beside him. His face turns cold, sweat begins to flow down his face but he doesn't stop moving. He begins to pick up his pace until he is running. He suddenly trips and hits his head. He wakes up in the middle of the night safe in his bedroom. It was only just a nightmare. His bedroom is completely dark. Turning on the light, he sees that nothing in his room is how he left it. The door slowly creeks open and his mother and father walk in. Their faces are the same but something is off. They both have an eerie smile on their faces. They stare at him and then begin to scream. The camera cuts to the boys body laying on the ground with blood coming out of his face. Ambulance sounds can be heard in the background.

Justification - Although he is 34, he has the face of a small child. He is perfect for the role as he is small and is built like a little boy.

Gender - Female

Hobbies - Modelling, Tennis, Chess, Choir, Cage Fighting, Tap Dancing.
Justification - She is an amazing actress and really fits the "mum" role. She has a lot of experience in the acting industry.

Name - Kenny Longbottom

Age - 42
Gender - Male
Hobbies - Archery, Darts, Roller-skating, Bull Fighting, MMA, Professional Food Eater, Fasion designer, swimming, opera, golfing, spear fishing and last but not least Cage Fighting.
Justification - He has a lot of experience in front of crowds due to his hobbies. He has a lot of confidence and is not scared to play any role.

This is the house the film will be set in. The location of the house is in the middle of nowhere, so it is perfect for the filming of a horror. Inside the house is spacious and great for filming. Beside the house is a perfect road for the filming of my opening scene. The house is owned by my uncle, making it easier to get access to the house to film.

Costume/Makeup:

All characters are wearing casual clothing such as jeans, coats, regular t-shirts. None of the characters are going to be wearing any makeup. This adds a naturalistic and real feel to the film.
